Yes, gringo, that’s what they call Europeans, North Americans and Australians here in South America. Needless to explain that we are not citizens of the United States, we are still gringos.
However, by answering in Spanish, which is no longer so lame, given the many compliments they have received, it puts them in a bit of a bind. Some, taken aback, ask me if I am Argentinean, others even if I am Peruvian (it’s okay that I am tanned now, but ….:D ).
The strange thing is that no one has ever suggested that I am Spanish… I guess I don’t have the face for it….
Other skits that have happened on the streets of Lima involve a local music group. On the days when my hair is the most messed up (most of it), people have happened to stop me on the street shouting Libido!!! Libido!!!
There and then I didn’t understand, especially since they were doing it with conviction. Then one person explained to me that Libido is the name of a local rock band, and apparently I looked vaguely like a member of the band (I didn’t think so…).
But they were excited, thinking it was really me…. Must have been the mask…… Libido!!!
