After three days in Medellín, here we are on our way to Cartagena. The flight is at 1 p.m. and on the plane next to us sits a girl (quite pretty) who, when it was time to fasten the seatbelt, asks Luis, with a sultry accent, if he could help her fasten it.
Of course she could!!! 😆
Cartagena at first glance is very reminiscent of Miami, with its skyscrapers by the ocean, especially the area near the port, but it is immediately clear that you are in Colombia as soon as you move two blocks away. The walled part of the city is historic (Cartagena is the oldest city in Colombia), incredibly colourful, with ‘Cuban’ style houses. The influence is strong, even the women with their typical clothes are very reminiscent of Cuban ones. We therefore spend the afternoon exploring the city enclosed within the walls, among the various small squares, streets and along the perimeter of the fortification. Outside, the city is very modern and orderly, as much as it is poor and chaotic, depending on where you move. Inside the walls, however, it is a little paradise, one feels without a doubt in a bubble, safe, cosy and exotic. All this changes a little as soon as night falls 😅.
The city fills up with prostitutes and drug dealers, much more than in the other cities of Colombia, and many times the girls are nothing more than little girls… 😵‍💫Ovunque you are walking along and you are stopped by girls looking for clients… quite a sad thing…
We are unlucky though, at the time of our stay there is a law in force (called lei seca) that forbids nightclubs to stay open and sell alcohol for the whole weekend . This is because on Sunday there are national elections and they want to avoid riots.
No partying in Cartagena 😕
